Virginia Festival of the Book

If anyone is in Charlottesville, Virginia next week, CPDP chief photographer Lloyd Wolf will be speaking about the Columbia Pike Documentary Project's book "Living Diversity" as part of a panel for the Virginia Festival for the Book.

The program is entitled: "A State of Many Nations: Immigration and the Changing Face of Virginia"

The work of the Columbia Pike Documentary project is highlighted in the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities' (VFH) recent publication "VIEWS: Forty Years, Forty Stories."

Patrick Henry Elementary School | The League of Learners

The students in Mr. Nathan Erwin's third grade class at Patrick Henry Elementary School are doing a community mapping project - exploring the environment, businesses, history, and culture of the Columbia Pike neighborhood they all live in.

CPDP photographer Lloyd Wolf has led them in workshops, and will be going out to photograph with them as their project moves forward.

Thanks to this lively, bright, and enthusiastic bunch, whom Mr. Erwin has named the "League of Learners."

33rd annual Ethiopian Christmas celebration at the Ethiopian Community Development Council

The Ethiopian Community Development Council (ECDC) celebrated it's 33rd annual Ethiopian Christmas with a party at it's offices just off Columbia Pike.

Traditional foods were served, prepared by Dama Restaurant, 1503 Columbia Pike, in Arlington.

Thank you to Dr. Teferra and his staff, and congratulations to them for another year of continued good work on behalf of immigrants and other citizens in our community.

Santa on the Pike / Holiday Toy Drive

A large crowd gathered to meet Santa Claus, who arrived in a Arlington County Police pickup truck.

This event occurred in Columbia Pike Plaza, on the corner of South Dinwiddie Street and Columbia Pike.

From an Arlington County Police Department press release: "The Arlington County Police Department believes in helping those in need."

Living Diversity Exhibition installation | Arlington Mill Community Center

The exhibition opened October 17, 2015, and will run at least a month. 

Open gallery visiting hours are Tuesday to Friday 3:30 to 6:30 pm, and Saturdays from 2:00 to 4:00 pm. On Thursdays the gallery will be open from 3:30 to 8:30 pm.

Living Diversity exhibition opening at the Arlington Mill Community Center

Our exhibition had a large turnout, and we are still in a bit of awe and happiness at the presence of so many supporters, and the positive expressions made to us about the work.

Arlington County Board members Walter Tejada, Libby Garvey, John Vihstadt, Jay Fissette, Board Chair Mary Hynes, Virginia State Delegate Alfonso Lopez, School Board Chair Emma Violand Sanchez, and David Bearinger of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities were in attendance. Most of them shared their words in celebration of the event and of the harmonious diversity that exists in our community.

A huge thank you to Susan Soroko, director of creative economy with the Arlington County Economic Development office, Takis Karantonis and Christine Hopkins of CPRO, all of whom navigated the mazes of the bureaucracy, got the art on the wall, provided funds and other critical support - who made it all happen. Much obliged.

Thanks also to Claudia Salazar of Cafe Sazon, who catered the delicious food, and to Rick Franklin, our fine local Piedmont blues musician, who graced us with his stylings.

And blessings to all of you who attended, and who have supported our efforts,in ways great and small, to document the community over the years.
