45th Annual Flores-Gambino Memorial Day Party

For forty-five years, the Flores-Gambino family has held a large old-fashioned Memorial Day celebration at their home on S. 6th Street, in the Penrose neighborhood just off Columbia Pike. Friends, family and neighbors mingle, relax, make note of the contributions of America's service-members to our freedom, enjoy potluck, BBQ, good times and fine homegrown music.

Eddie Jenkins "Arlington's most experienced drummer"

Eddie Jenkins, a 93-year old percussionist, sat in with the musicians at the Flores-Gambino Memorial Day Party. Mr. Jenkins is a veteran of the great Bunny Berrigan's ensemble, and was a long-time memeber of the US Army Band. According to his son and other musicians, he is "Arlington's most experienced drummer."

Columbia Grove Apartments

APAH, the Arlington Partnership for Affordable Housing, held a celebration for the re-opening of the remodeled Columbia Grove apartments, 1010 S. Frederick Street just off Columbia Pike.

Pictured are a mix of residents, APAH board and staff, Arlington County and federal officials, and business partners of the project.

Pike 200 Celebration

These photographs are the photographer's choice of the most visually engaging portraits and moments at the kickoff celebration of Pike 200, held April 12, 2010 in the Salsa Room, 2619 Columbia Pike, Arlington. Over two hundred people came out to commemorate the Congressional Charter of April 12, 1810 which established the Columbia Turnpike Company.

Sara Collins, noted Arlington historian and Columbia Pike expert, Dr. Talmadge Williams of the Black Heritage Museum of Arlington, Todd Endo of the Urban Alternative and CPDP, and Chris Zimmerman, Arlington County Board Vice-Chairman, all related the rich history of Columbia Pike from the days of the Civil War to today’s culturally diverse urban community.

There was also be a special performance by the Columbia Pike Community Chorus of the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" which is believed to have been composed while traveling along Columbia Pike during the Civil War.

Chef Natoli and his students at the Arlington Career Center’s Culinary Arts and Sciences Program prepare a PIKE 200 birthday cake.

Change, change, and more change. And a moment to mark our history.
