History Walk - Arlington United Methodist Church

The Arlington United Methodist Church sponsored a history walk in honor of the church's 150th anniversary, led by noted local historian Sarah Collins. Presentations were made by many, including Civil War reenactor Walt DeGroot, Doug True, who was baptized in the church in 1917, and his sister-in law, Janie True.

Flux 09 people

Photographic work of the Columbia Pike Photographic Documentary project was shown at the well-attended Flux 09 event, held this past Saturday April 18, 2009, at JaziRock Studio, 3213 Columbia Pike. So far as anyone can recall, it was the first major art event and exhibition of a public nature along the Pike in years, perhaps ever.

Here is a sampling of the interesting and diverse cast of characters.

JaziRock, AKA Kevin Irvin, is a young cutting-edge grafitti artist, who has his studio at 3213 Columbia Pike in Arlington.

Winter Light/Close enough to home

The sun lingered as the moon came out. Winter.

The snow and rocks by the water is very close by to where Columbia Pike passes over Four Mile Run.

Jim McCaskill and Jake

Long-time Columbia Pike area resident Jim McCaskill, with his beloved cat, Jake.

Jim taught in Arlington County Public Schools for thirty years, and retired from teaching a decade ago, He also had been a sergeant in the US military, stationed in Europe.

He was recently interviewed for this project by Todd and Paula Endo.

These portraits depict Meng K. Taing, of the Oriental Supermarket, at 5100 Columbia Pike; the owner and employees of the International Barbershop (Huong K Hoang, Sirinapa Srinuan, Jeanine Phoung, Hue So Huynh), at 5035 Columbia Pike; and of Shawn McGhee, a friend of the photographer, shown on S. Dinwiddie Street, just off the Pike.
