Prio Bangla 2015

The Prio Bangla Festival, an annual celebration of our local Bangladeshi community, was held on September 12, 2015, just off Columbia Pike.

Living Diversity on Smithsonian Magazine's instagram feed

Molly Roberts, photo editor of Smithsonian Magazine, gave the Columbia Pike Documentary Project the opportunity to feature our work on the magazine's instagram feed for an entire week.

We greatly appreciate this opportunity to share our vision with an international audience.

The work of all of the photographers who appear in our book Living Diversity - Aleksandra Lagkueva, Xang Mimi Ho, Paula Endo, Lloyd Wolf, and Duy Tran - was highlighted during the week.

We are proud to announce that our new book: Living Diversity The Columbia Pike Documentary Project is now available from Amazon! 

Mimi Huynh, Duy Tran, Paula Endo, Lloyd Wolf, and Aleksandra Lagkueva each has contributed a suite of images as part of the team effort powerfully documenting & presenting the community's culture. 

Significant essays by noted cultural, academic, and community experts have been contributed to the book to help understand and introduce this exceptional body of work.

Solstice Party

The Matheson/Troutman family hosted their second annual Solstice block party for neighbors and friends in the 3400 block of South 6th Street, in the Penrose section of Arlington, adjacent to Columbia Pike.

The moon bounces were rented from Arlington County Parks and Recreation Department, there were sno-cones for the kids, plus other merriments and good community cheer.

Patrick Henry School - Ms. Constantine's class project on Columbia Pike

The third grade class at Patrick Henry School, led by their teacher, Ms. Dahlia Constantine, are engaged in a community action and advocacy project about the neighborhood they live in.

Lloyd Wolf, chief photographer of the Columbia Pike Documentary Project, has been working with the class, particularly a group of five lively students (Natalia, Mika, Lidya, Colby, and Malachi), who have taken examining and promoting locally-owned small businesses as their mission.

On their own they have set up a website, TrythePike, and are creating a poster which they will place around the community as part of their work informing residents about local business resources, and encouraging them to patronize them.

Other class groups are working on issues related to green spaces, promoting affordable housing, kid-friendly spaces, and protecting animals, both wild and domestic.

Flores Gambino 50th Annual Memorial Day Picnic

This year was the 50th annual celebration of the Flores Gambino Family Memorial Day Picnic, in the Penrose neighborhood off Columbia Pike.

Homegrown live music, homemade covered dishes, a pig roast, barbecue, relatives, friends, neighbors, moon bounce for the kids, and much cheer.

This event genuinely is "all good."

Thanks to Maria Flores, Joe Flores, Maria "Pete"Durgan, and the whole merry and diverse Flores Gambino clan. May you celebrate at least fifty more together.

Patrick Henry School- Third grade field trip

Students from Ms. Dahlia Constantine's 3rd grade class at Patrick Henry School are working to document and create advocacy projects about issues of concern in their community, which is along Columbia Pike.

These photographs were all made during their visit to the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization (CPRO), where they heard from the director, Takis Karantonis.

Note: All students in Arlington County Public Schools have their own Apple iPads issued to them for use.
